Personal statement and collaboration.
By now you should have prepared a personal statement describing your approach to photography. When speaking to your partner, consider which aspects of your personal statement link you both together.
You will be given a theme on which to run your collaboration.
At a pre-arranged time, you and your partner will each go out to two different locations.
Once there you will hold a 5 minute phone/IM/text conversation with each other, describing what you can see.
You will jointly agree on a scene/subject/composition to photograph each, and take just one image (you can take a few frames for technical reasons if you wish, but they must all be of the same composition).
You will present the two images as a diptych, and evaluate their success.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN DISCUSSING THE PROJECT WITH YOUR PARTNER:
What is the definition of a diptych?
What orientation? Portrait or Landscape?
What file size will you be shooting? Raw? Jpeg? Film? (Consider the implications/end usage)
Will post production be allowed or not? (anything from cropping or white balancing to full digital manipulation)
The finished product.
Once you have exchanged images and agreed on the layout of your final diptych, submit a copy to the tutors, along with a short written evaluation of the project. Your feedback should consider – how easy or difficult was the process? How successful was the communication? How successful is the final diptych against the original brief? How enjoyable was the process?
Video footage
We will need students who are willing to record video footage of the process, as well as participants in the photography. Filming can be done on any DSLR or small movie camera which produces reasonable quality MP4 or avi files (again consider end useage)
Taking the project further
Once the initial collaboration is complete, there will be an opportunity to review all of the work submitted, including photographic, feedback (written) and video footage, and discussions will be held about possible ways to take the project forwards (possibilities include self-publishing a book, making a short documentary film).

HND Photography students Ivana Patarcic and Guilherme Novaes have successfully completed a test Diptych shoot for our latest cooperative project with Bradford College.
Ivana and Guilherme chose to collaborate on the theme ‘Open Spaces’. Working together ‘live’, they shot their respective images ‘at the same instant’ in Ireland and Austria.
In accordance with the diptych project guidelines the photographers stayed in constant communication (in this instance by mobile phone) during the shoots to discuss their locations and potential images. On agreement, they shot the two photographs at exactly the same time.
